The Royalist Chess Club of Kurunegala operates under the banner "Where Strategy Meets Royalty." While our early foundational work began as a passionate grassroots movement at Wayamba Royal College, the club was officially and properly established on April 7, 2025.

What started as a tight-knit circle of determined players has rapidly expanded into a premier competitive network. Today, we proudly unite more than 50 active players across 5 prominent schools in the Kurunegala region, cultivating an environment where tactical minds flourish, sportsmanship is paramount, and the next generation of Sri Lankan chess talent is forged

What We Do

Inter-School Mobilization: Bridging the gap between regional schools to host highly competitive matches and collaborative training camps.
Elite Player Development: Running advanced workshops focusing on endgame mastery, opening theories, and psychological resilience during high-stakes games.
Tournament Organization: Staging flagship regional events—such as the Duel of Royal Tacticians—to give local players crucial rated match experience.

Renowned for his psychological resilience and sharp tactical play, he holds a formidable track record of defeating significantly higher-rated opponents. Reflecting his dominant consistency on the board, Tharusha is a two-time winner of the prestigious Best Men's Award, capturing the title in two consecutive years (2024 and 2025).

Profile: As one of the most respected senior players in the Royalist Chess Club, Gayanuka brings invaluable competitive maturity to the team. Over his distinguished junior and senior career, he has claimed numerous regional championships across Kurunegala, making him the ideal mentor to guide our players from school-level matches into high-pressure tournaments.

Profile: Dinuja stands as one of the most promising homegrown chess talents to ever emerge from the Royalist system. Transitioning his sharp analytical skills from the board to organizational leadership, he now serves as our Main Executive and Secretary, flawlessly managing club operations, public relations, and school network coordination.

Role: Logistics & Event Management

Profile: Vimukthi is the club’s top-performing active competitor and holds the distinction of having the highest FIDE rating in the entire club. Backed by an incredible run of recent form, he is the reigning 2026 Northwestern Province Junior National Champion. He balances his elite playing career with managing club logistics and tournament execution.
